The Nu Project is a no-glamor honest look at beauty and image in our world.

Female nudity isn’t hard to come by in the media, but the bodies we see usually represent a fairly limited scope of sizes and shapes. The Nu Project, a collection of nude photographs shot by Minneapolis photographer Matt Blum, seeks to add some variety to the mix. Blum started The Nu Project in 2005 but said it really took off when his wife, Katy Kessler, became the project’s editor. Blum sees the photos as filling a void. “When I started shooting nudes there was no project like it,” he told The Huffington Post in an email. The things that I had seen either used models with typical model bodies or average people who were made to look extremely unimpressive. I figured there was a way to treat women (of any size/shape) like models and photograph them beautifully, respectfully without a lot of sexual under or overtones. The women photographed are all volunteers, and most of the pictures are taken in the subjects’ homes — where they feel most comfortable. The Nu Project’s website showcases six galleries of nudes, three shot in North America, three in South America. Although Blum told HuffPost that he feels that they have a “good variety of people involved,” he and Kessler acknowledge on The Nu Project website that they’d love for the subjects to be more diverse. “The hardest part for us is that the project is 100 percent volunteer, so I do not see the women until I show up at their door,” Blum writes on the website. “We’re doing our best to encourage all types of women, but we need volunteers of all backgrounds and walks of life to make the project more complete.” Blum said he ultimately hopes that these images inspire the women who see them to feel better about their own bodies. “It’s been really exciting to hear people react to the images,” he told HuffPost. “We get a lot of feedback from women (especially) who have struggled to see themselves as beautiful, and this project has helped them on that path.”

That: Needed,

I have the feeling of our little-big group standing out
there somewhere inside me. And I can make my skin
hold us closer and closer until I am back there.
It is like a field under a blue sky. There is an openness.

Maybe we were born into it. Or maybe it came out of us.
Imagine a statue in the field. The geologist pulls it apart
and labels all of the stones by their scientific names
and we feel this part is holy too. For we were real bodies,

not the statue of a God. We were an outline in the rain,
in the words we were learning and leaving, in the wind
that smells like fall. (And will always.) The statue
merely pointed/painted to the way we’d found ourselves

failing again and again gracefully. Now imagine even, if you
need to, on nights when you must, years and years from now,
after the geologist and the labels have gone, when we have been
beat down into the particles of the dirt. Even then

in that field and blue sky soon losing even that,
losing that and ourselves, our senses, the skin shrinking
until we are what connected our insides to our outsides.
Now imagine a statue of that, made of stone and the smell of fall.

Assata Shakur is one of the strongest and most courageous black women you will ever read about. Assata meaning “she who struggles” and Shakur meaning “the thankful one” is a true warrior in the fight for black equality. At a very young age in the 1960’s, she participated in various struggles including the Black Liberation Movement, the Student Rights Movement, and the movement to end the war in Vietnam. As member of the Black Panther party, she fed thousands of black children every morning insisting that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. She, as a young teen, mentored many young black girls on the importance of natural hair and supporting black men. In 1973, she was falsely accused of shooting a state trooper on the NJ turnpike after medical evidence showed she clearly couldn’t have done the crime. She spent almost 7 years in prison in solitary confinement, suffering from brutal beatings from prison guards, severe malnourishment, and complete lack of medical attention. Through it all, she stood strong and with the help of the Black Panthers, was able to escape that hell. Today 40 years later, she is still being pursued by the FBI and recently was placed on the FBI’S “Most Wanted Terrorist” list. Assata is a Terrorist now?! This is the same list the Taliban and OSAMA BIN LADEN were placed on. She is not only the first woman to be placed on the list, but the second person in history from the U.S to be placed on the list. The state of New Jersey also recently added $1 million to the FBI’s $1 million bounty on her head. They are offering $2 MILLION for her capture. Isn’t it crazy that New Jersey with all the problems it has such as terrible school systems, homeless, unemployment, and crime rates can come up with $1 Million to place on Assata’s head? The city of Camden in NEW JERSEY btw just laid off nearly 100 teachers for financial issues!! Why couldn’t the money go there? They are even trying to cut financial aid for college students but we have $1 Million for this bullshit? Assata was basically kidnapped by the police, sentenced to life in prison with no evidence, severely beaten on the regular, starved almost to death then she is able to finally escape the torture and now she’s the terrorist? We now live in a society where when the oppressed runs from there oppressor they are a criminal!!! I guess that means it was wrong for the 3 Cleveland girls to escape too huh?

While in prison she birthed a beautiful baby girl named Kakuya Shakur. Today she continues to educate herself with hopes of one day liberating her people. She is a phenomenal poet and if you get the chance read her autobiography. It’ll change your life. The fact that they are still chasing her and offering so much money shows that they are afraid of what she symbolizes. Assata is an inspiration to us all and shows us how important it is to be able to stand on your own two feet. Stand for something or Fall for anything. Strong, Black Woman I Salute your Existence!!!!!
